“Silent Witnesses” (2024-2025)
“Silent Witnesses” is a body of work born from the past pain that my twin sister and I share. Our relationship overlaps in strange ways, and each of us expresses these memories through different forms.
The Transformation of Memory and Tankin(forging)：
In the process of hammering metal plates into shape, I unconsciously call forth memories of my own pain. Similarly, my sister gives words to that pain through her autobiographical fiction. In this work, I transferred a photograph superimposing my face and my sister's face onto a metal plate. As I strike it with a hammer, I experience a sensation of gradual transformation into something new—an existence that is neither “me” nor “my sister.” It is as though memory is not merely a trace of pain, but undergoes transformation within the very act of creation, taking on new meaning.
The Overlapping of Voice and Image：
I also produced a video in which I read my sister's fiction aloud. In the video(2025), while voicing her text, I hammer a metal plate onto which the same superimposed photograph of our two faces has been transferred. Though it is certainly my own voice, the sensation that it gradually comes to resonate like my sister's voice is also a crucial element of this work.
“Silent Witnesses” is a work that asks how shared memory transforms through artistic expression and takes on new meaning. Within the intersection of metal as material and the ephemeral presences of voice and image, pain becomes testimony, and silence takes form.
